The Imperial Dom Pedro II Bridge is an iron bridge over the Paraguaçu river linking the towns of Cachoeira and São Félix in inland Bahia. It opened on 7 July 1885 and was one of the major engineering works in South America in its day. Built of iron and timber imported from England, it is about 365 metres long, and its central pier stands on a small, plant-covered island in the river. The bridge opened rail traffic between the Feira de Santana area and the Chapada Diamantina in the 19th century, and it still carries cars, the railway line and pedestrians on one deck, causing hold-ups whenever a train crosses. The state of Bahia listed it in 2002 and the national heritage institute in 2007. It has become one of the region's best-known sights, and walking across between the two towns gives views of the river and both historic waterfronts.
