The Tancredo Neves Cultural and Tourist Centre, known as CENTUR, is a convention and arts centre in Belém, opened in 1986 to a design by the architects Euler Santos Arruda, Edson Santos Arruda and Rafael Gonçalves. It is the seat of the Pará Cultural Foundation, a public body of the state government. Pará's cultural policy goes back to 1975, when a secretariat for culture, sport and tourism was created to preserve historic, literary, artistic and scientific heritage and to develop tourism, at a time when Brazil drew up its first national culture plan and set up several federal cultural institutions. The building has halls for shows, exhibitions and courses, and the foundation runs cultural programmes there year round, a window on the cultural life of Pará's capital; check the programme.
