The Theatro da Paz, the Theatre of Peace, is the leading cultural house of northern Brazil, built in neoclassical style in the Amazon rubber boom. Its foundation stone was laid on 3 March 1869 and the building was finished in 1874, but it opened to the public only in 1878, after an inquiry into its builders. In 2026 UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site together with the Amazon Theatre in Manaus. Colonnaded porticoes surround it, looking onto Praça da República; its auditorium is horseshoe-shaped, and its lobby holds two Carrara marble busts of the Brazilian writers José de Alencar and Gonçalves Dias. Guided visits run every hour, and entry is free on Wednesdays. Arrive a quarter of an hour early, as groups are limited.
