Praça da República is one of Belém's best-known squares and postcards. From the city's founding in 1616 it was a large open field, known as the Largo da Campina and then the Largo da Pólvora, after an ammunition and gunpowder store was built there. After independence in 1822 it was reshaped and honoured Emperor Pedro II, and it took its present name in late 1889 with the new republic. The square only began to be developed and prized with the opening in 1878 of the Theatro da Paz, the first large performance venue in the Amazon, built between 1869 and 1874. In the Belle Époque the Cine Olympia and the Grand Hotel rose around it as the square was reorganised. Today it is a meeting point for locals and tourists and a stage for cultural events and fairs, framed by the Theatro da Paz and the Teatro Waldemar Henrique. It makes a walk combined with a visit to the theatre, which offers guided tours Tuesday to Sunday.
