The Bolonha Mansion is a historic house in Belém built between 1905 and 1908 by the engineer Francisco Bolonha as a gift for his wife, Alice Tem-Brink. Bolonha travelled widely in Europe and his work was influenced by Gustave Eiffel, and the mansion is a leading example of eclectic architecture in Brazil, richly decorated inside and out; it has been listed as Pará state heritage since 1982. It belongs to the Amazon «Rubber Cycle», when merchants and politicians made huge fortunes from rubber and built grand houses in Belém, called palaces after their families, which became the stage for the elite's dinners, balls and recitals. Many were demolished in the 20th century amid property speculation, and the Bolonha Mansion is one of the finest survivors. For all its ornament it proved impractical, with poor ventilation, and it was left empty a few years after its owner's death in 1939. Today it houses a museum run by the city; entry is free from Tuesday to Friday with guided tours through the day, so check times before you go.
