By rescuing ruin: when the Avars destroyed neighbouring Salona (614 AD), its refugees fled into the abandoned palace walls and built homes inside and upon its halls — every century adding its layer until Roman melted through medieval into modern as one fabric. What you see is not restoration but continuation: the city is the palace, grown seventeen centuries.
The city itself two (palace, Riva, Marjan) — its greater worth as base: Krka and Klis north, the islands by sea (Hvar and Brač an hour's ferry), UNESCO Trogir at half that. The Split-Dubrovnik coastal week is Croatia's standard journey — the shore road between them among Europe's finest drives.

Diocletian's Palace is earth's strangest ruin in condition: the Roman emperor's retirement palace (305 AD — the only one to abdicate willingly, to grow his cabbages) never became a visited relic but a lived city: three thousand people literally reside within its walls — laundry on Roman columns, cafés in the guards' halls: a living monument without peer (UNESCO 1979). Its heart is the Peristyle, the columned court where the emperor was worshipped divine — today the city's daily theatre with cafés on the Roman steps — and the Vestibule, the sky-open dome where Dalmatian klapa song (UNESCO's audible heritage) finds perfect echo, watched by the Egyptian granite sphinx (3,500 years — Europe's oldest resident in place). The Cellars beneath take a small ticket: Diocletian's lower halls complete (Daenerys' dragons were filmed in them) — and the four gates, Golden, Silver, Iron and Bronze, quarter the palace. Live the palace, don't visit it: Peristyle coffee at morning, lane-loss at noon, klapa at night.
