The Pandhof is the Gothic cloister garden adjoining the Dom church โ the loveliest quiet corner in bustling central Utrecht: arched stone galleries surrounding a medicinal herb garden replanted in the medieval manner, with a fountain at the centre and total calm metres from the crowded Domplein. The galleries themselves are a Gothic gem, with worked stone tracery and carvings that tell the story of Saint Martin, Utrecht's patron. The garden was the monks' pharmacy โ medicinal and kitchen herbs arranged as they were, a living picture of monastic life. Entry is free, and it is the ideal break between the tower climb and the church visit โ a hidden green oasis few hurried visitors know.
