Feskekorka is a fish market built in 1874 on the bank of the Rosenlund canal, its popular name meaning literally the fish church — because the architect designed it with high Gothic arches, a pitched roof and a facade resembling Norwegian stave churches, a design that caused considerable controversy when built for looking excessive for a fish market. The functional reason behind the shape is entirely practical: the high arches and raised roof allowed a wide hall with no internal columns obstructing the selling stalls, together with the natural ventilation a fish market needed before refrigeration. What looked like ornament was an engineering solution. Gothenburg is a west-coast port city and fish is native to its cooking: prawns, oysters, crab and herring. The building underwent extensive restoration in recent years and reopened with a mix of selling stalls and restaurants — and it is the city's best place to taste fresh oysters from the Bohuslan coast.
