Grona Lund is Sweden's oldest amusement park, running since 1883 on a very small plot at the tip of Djurgarden island, right on the water. That tightness is what actually distinguishes it: engineers had to build rides over and around each other, so the coasters pass between buildings and above visitors' heads at close quarters, giving a stronger sense of speed than equivalents in open parks. Its best-known ride is Eclipse, one of the world's tallest free-fall towers at over a hundred metres — the pause at the top before the drop gives you a few seconds of the widest view over Stockholm before it vanishes. There are classic wooden coasters and suspended steel ones too, alongside gentler children's rides. Its second dimension is live music: since the 1960s the main stage has hosted major international names in summer (Bob Marley played here in 1980), and entry usually includes the concert. The park is seasonal, running from late April to September, with a special Halloween opening.
