The Viking Museum on Djurgarden is a modern narrative museum rather than a collection museum: it displays no original artefacts (those are at the Swedish History Museum) but explains the Viking age through models, reconstructed scenes and interactive screens, designed for general visitors and families rather than specialists. Its best-known element is Ragnfrid's Saga: an indoor ride in small cars through three-dimensional scenes telling the story of an eleventh-century Swedish family — a man who leaves on a trading voyage east and never returns, and a woman who runs the farm alone. The point is to show the Viking age from the household's angle rather than the raid's. The rest of the museum covers seafaring, trade, belief and daily life, with steady correction of stereotypes. The location is excellent, right at the entrance to Djurgarden beside the major museums, and it is a good choice for families with children — while anyone after original artefacts should head to the History Museum.
