A hill rising to about 1,120 metres north of central Zakopane, reached by a funicular from the end of Krupówki street. What makes it the first destination in Zakopane for most visitors is that it faces the right way: the summit looks south over the whole Tatra range — the only Alpine-character mountains in Poland — spread out in front of you behind the town. From the mountains themselves you do not get this view; from here you do. The funicular ride is five minutes, on the oldest line of its kind in the region, running since the 1930s. At the top is a long promenade lined with stalls selling oscypek — the local smoked cheese — and woodcraft, along with restaurants, a summer slide and playgrounds. That makes it successful with families but also makes it very commercial, and you should know that. Anyone wanting the view without the stalls can walk west along the ridge away from the station, where the path is quiet. Clarity decides everything: in fog you see nothing of the Tatras.

North of central Zakopane, 1,120 m
A smoked sheep's milk cheese made by Tatra shepherds in a traditional way, pressed in carved wooden moulds that give it its distinctive shape. It carries European protected-origin status, meaning the name may only be used for cheese made in this region by this method. It is sold grilled with cranberry jam at Zakopane's stalls.
Gubałówka is easier, cheaper, quicker and gives the classic view of the Tatras from the north, but it is commercial and crowded. Kasprowy Wierch is inside the mountains at 1,987 metres, reached by cable car, with a genuine high-mountain view and walking routes starting from it. With one clear day, Kasprowy; with children or little time, Gubałówka.
