By car 75 minutes (parking your only worry โ before nine). Public: train to Attnang-Puchheim, change for Hallstatt, then the ferry โ two and a half hours repaid by the final lakeside window. Organised day tours are the crowded lazy option.
The killing peak: summer mid-days and Chinese-Korean holidays โ the village literally chokes 10-16h. The gold: September-October colours, May, and the quiet snow winter's own magic. Any season before nine or after five.

Hallstatt is the village become legend: stacked timber houses on a narrow ribbon between cliff and mirror lake, a church spire stitching the scene โ the picture that made China build a full replica, and a million yearly visitors seek a village of seven hundred souls. Its name is salt (Celtic hal) and its wealth was salt: seven thousand mining years above it lent "Hallstatt culture" to an entire European age. The essence walks in two hours: the timber market square, the lake lane, the famous photo point north of the village, the boathouses (Fuhtzen) on the water. The heart's advice: stay a night โ at five the village empties of coach day-trippers and Hallstatt returns to its people and its small hotels' guests, and its misty lake morning is the loveliest thing Austria owns.
The classic north angle โ the picture that circled the earth.
Coloured timber around the Trinity column โ the village heart.
The Fuhtzen on the water โ Hallstatt's floating garages for centuries.
The lake breathing cloud before eight โ the overnighter's magic.
