The H'ART Museum occupies the Amstelhof, a huge seventeenth-century former old-people's home on the river Amstel turned into spacious galleries โ for decades it was the Amsterdam branch of Russia's Hermitage, until it cut ties in 2022, renamed itself H'ART, and built new partnerships with the British Museum and others. It has no large permanent collection; its strength is the major temporary exhibitions it hosts in its vast halls โ masterpieces loaned from the world's great museums, organised to a high standard. So what is on when you are in Amsterdam decides your entry, exactly like Europe's great exhibition palaces. The building itself and its historic Dutch courtyard reward a look, and its Amstel-side position in the old centre is lovely โ check its programme before planning.
