It helps a great deal. Anyone who knows his writing will find the visit moving; anyone who does not will see a small tidy house. The guided tour supplies context, but reading briefly about his life beforehand doubles what you get from it.
This is the family's summer house, a small museum with its original furniture. The Centro Federico García Lorca is a modern cultural institution in the city centre holding his archive and running a programme of exhibitions and events. The two are entirely different in nature.

The summer house of the family of the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, today a museum inside a public park that carries his name, west of central Granada. Lorca spent every summer here for years and wrote parts of his most important work in this house. The furniture, the desk and the belongings are shown as they were, which makes the visit closer to entering a house stopped in time than to a conventional literary museum. Access is usually by a short guided tour. The historical context is heavy: Lorca was arrested in Granada in 1936 at the start of the Spanish Civil War and executed, and he is among the most widely known victims of that war. The house is read today in the light of that ending. The surrounding park is large, free and good for a pause, and the site is a reasonable walk from the centre or close to a tram stop. Go if literature matters to you; the house is small and its value lies in who lived there rather than in its architecture.
