Boa Viagem Island, «good voyage», is a small island inside Guanabara Bay in Niterói, described in many accounts and painted in 18th- and 19th-century plates as a paradise, its caves and submerged vegetation making its waters an unrivalled fishing ground. It got its name because sailors entering or leaving the bay gave thanks for a good voyage or asked a blessing for a new one, and captains and crews helped look after the place according to the length of their journeys. On its highest point stands an 18th-century chapel overlooking the bay, and the island also held an artillery battery to complete the defence of the bay entrance. The island is clearly seen from Niterói's Boa Viagem seafront, and with the chapel on its summit it is one of the bay's loveliest views, especially near the Museum of Contemporary Art. Access to the island is limited to set times, so check before going.
