The Museum of History and Arts of the State of Rio de Janeiro, known as the Museu do Ingá, occupies the Nilo Peçanha Palace in Niterói's Ingá district, seat of the Rio de Janeiro state government from 1904 to 1975, when Niterói was the state capital. The palace is named after Nilo Peçanha, who governed the state and later became President of Brazil. The museum keeps documents, artworks and objects from colonial times to the 20th century and hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural activities open to the public, a good introduction to the history of the old state of Rio de Janeiro. Entry is free Wednesday to Sunday 12:00-17:00.
