The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum, MAC, is Oscar Niemeyer's flying saucer: a white concrete cup 16 metres high with a 50-metre cupola, perched on the Boa Viagem lookout above Guanabara Bay. It opened on 2 September 1996 and rises from a single cylindrical base in an 817-square-metre reflecting pool that Niemeyer likened to a flower. A wide ramp climbs to the entrance, and inside, a ring of windows around the galleries frames views of Rio de Janeiro and Sugarloaf Mountain across the bay. Its collection of 1,217 works, assembled since the 1950s by the collector João Sattamini, is the second-largest collection of contemporary art in Brazil. Niterói lies across the bay from Rio and is reached by ferry or over the Rio-Niterói bridge.
