A cultural centre and city theatre in a glass building on Sergels torg in central Stockholm, among the clearest examples of modernist architecture in Sweden. The building is itself a statement: a wholly glazed front running the length of the square, designed in the 1960s on the idea that culture should be visible and open rather than hidden behind walls. From outside you see people inside reading and sitting. It holds public libraries, exhibition halls, theatres, a cinema, cafés and a space set aside for children and teenagers. Most of it is open free: you walk in, sit and read without buying anything. That makes it among the most practically useful places in Stockholm — a city cold for most of the year and very expensive, where a warm indoor space with free seating and a view over the square has real value. The upper terraces hold cafés looking over the city centre. Some exhibitions and performances are ticketed — check the programme, but entry to the building itself is free.

Yes, for two reasons: the architecture is among Sweden's important modern buildings and is worth seeing from inside, and the place is practical — if the weather is cold or wet, or you want a free hour sitting in a city centre where everything costs, this is the best option in the middle of town.
The central square of modern Stockholm, laid out in the 1960s on two levels with a vertical glass fountain and a black-and-white triangular paving pattern that became an emblem of the city. The whole area came from a vast modernisation scheme that demolished old districts, a project still argued over in Sweden.
