A park of low hills and lakes in Yuexiu District, covering 54.43 hectares, 33 of them water, in three large lakes and four small ones, with a bird island of more than three thousand square metres at the centre. In ancient times this was a natural lake known as Lan Lake, linked to the Pearl River in the Han and Jin periods and Guangzhou's main inner harbour, until it shrank and silted up. In 1958 it was dug out again, with three other lakes, to hold back floods, and later became a park named after the old Liuhua Bridge. Entry is free, and the park is known for its palms, banyans and bonsai displays, a subtropical setting that makes it one of the city's loveliest parks for a walk.
