Guangzhou's largest mosque, in Yuexiu District a short walk east of the main railway station, with an old Muslim cemetery in its grounds that Muslim visitors to the city often seek out. The cemetery holds a tomb that local tradition attributes to the Companion Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, while Islamic sources record that he died near Medina and was buried in al-Baqi'; according to local sources it also holds the graves of some forty early Muslim missionaries from Arabia. The mosque is built in Ming style over about 1,860 square metres, its two-storey prayer hall holds about a thousand worshippers, and trees and flowers fill its courtyards, giving it the calm of a Chinese garden. Entry is free, and the tomb area opens about 08:30–17:00, per visitor guides; dress modestly and respect prayer times. For halal food, Arab, Turkish and Chinese Muslim restaurants cluster around Xiaobei and its Baohan Street, on Metro Line 5.
