Ljubljana's living room: Prešeren Square is a paved circle at the mouth of the Triple Bridge ringed by the pink Franciscan church (1660), Art Nouveau houses and cafés — at its centre the statue of the national poet France Prešeren crowned by a muse, gazing across the square at the window of his beloved Julija carved on the facade of her house opposite: a love story in stone all Slovenia knows. Closed to cars like the whole old town, the square is the city's stage: musicians, events, festivals and the great Christmas tree in December. From it branch the shopping streets north and the old town south across the bridge and the café-lined riverbank. The natural meeting point and the start and end of any day in the city — with the famous ice-cream house at its corner.
