Mangal das Garças, Mangrove of the Herons, is a nature park opened on 12 January 2005 on the bank of the Guamá River in Belém's historic centre, created on 40,000 square metres as a miniature of the Amazon environment in the heart of the city, with its forests and more than three hundred species of native trees. White herons and other birds roam freely, and there is a butterfly house where butterflies are released twice a day, a walk-in aviary and a museum of Amazon navigation. Highest of all is the Belém Lighthouse, a 47-metre observation tower looking over the river and the city. Entry to the park is free; the tower, butterfly house, aviary and museum each charge a small fee, or one pass covers all. The butterfly house releases its butterflies at 10:00 and 16:00.
