The Marina Barrage is a tidal barrage in southern Singapore, built at the confluence of five rivers across the Marina Channel between Marina East and Marina South, about 2 km east of Raffles Place in a straight line. First proposed in 1987 to help the country become more self-sufficient in water, it began construction on 22 March 2005 and officially opened on 31 October 2008 as Singapore's fifteenth reservoir and its first in the city. It provides water storage and flood control for low-lying districts, and turned the salt water of Marina Bay into fresh water for the first time in its history. It won a Superior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers in 2009. The barrage's grey spans and gates stretch between the calm Marina Reservoir and a sea busy with ships, and the roof of its main building is a wide green park. From there the view opens over the downtown towers and Gardens by the Bay. Visitors stroll the grassy roof, fly kites, picnic and come at sunset for the skyline. The building holds a small gallery on water management.
