The city is among the best in Sweden for families. **Liseberg** is the largest funfair in Scandinavia and its centrepiece — roller coasters and areas for small children, and in December it becomes an enormous Christmas market. **Universeum** is a seven-floor science centre with an indoor rainforest and a shark tank. **Slottsskogen** is a large free park with free-ranging Scandinavian animals — elk, seals and penguins. **Maritiman** here for the ships and the submarine. And the car-free **southern archipelago**, reached by ferry on an ordinary transit card — the best free day in the city.

Maritiman is **the largest floating ship museum in the world**: nineteen historic vessels moored in Gothenburg harbour and joined to one another by gangways, so you walk from ship to ship over the water. The fleet is deliberately varied to tell the whole maritime twentieth century: the **destroyer** Småland with its guns and command rooms; the **submarine** Nordkaparen, which you go down into through genuinely narrow passages rather than a mock-up; a fire boat, a tug, a freighter, a fishing boat and a lightship. The submarine is what everyone remembers: far tighter than you expect, and inside it you understand what living for months underwater with fifty men meant. **Not suitable for anyone who suffers in confined spaces**, nor in parts for very young children. The whole visit is outdoors among the ships — **almost entirely seasonal**, greatly reduced or closed in winter. **The decks are metal and the ladders are steep**; proper shoes are necessary.
