São Paulo's Resistance Memorial is a museum that keeps the memory of political repression and resistance in the state, opened on 24 January 2009 in a building with a heavy past. Ramos de Azevedo's office built it between 1910 and 1914 for the Sorocabana railway's administration, and from 1940 to 1983 it housed the state's department of political and social order, the political police that held opponents, above all under military rule. Its ground-floor meeting rooms were turned into cramped, stifling cells; four have been rebuilt from the testimony of people imprisoned in them, and visitors can step inside and read what detainees wrote on the walls. The museum's rooms show recorded testimonies, documents and maps of the city's places of repression, as part of a programme of research, documentation and education. Entry is free. It opens Wednesday to Monday 10:00-18:00 and closes on Tuesdays. It occupies the ground floor of the same building whose upper floors hold the Estação Pinacoteca, near Luz station and the Sala São Paulo concert hall.
