The Museum of the Portuguese Language is an interactive museum of language, described at its opening as the first museum in the world devoted entirely to a single language, set inside São Paulo's historic Luz railway station. The site is symbolic: thousands of immigrants from Europe and Asia arrived at this station via the port of Santos, and many met Portuguese here for the first time. It opened on 20 March 2006 and tells the story of the language, its variety and its words from Indigenous, African and immigrant tongues, through screens, games and sound. In December 2015 a major fire damaged the building; it was restored and the museum reopened. Entry is free on Tuesdays and Sundays. It stands opposite the Pinacoteca, so the two fit easily into one day.
