The Pinacoteca de São Paulo is the city's oldest art museum, founded by the state government in 1905 and devoted to Brazilian art from the 19th century to the present, in dialogue with cultures worldwide. It spreads over three buildings: the historic Pinacoteca Luz, Pinacoteca Estação and Pinacoteca Contemporânea. In the 1990s the Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha renovated the main building, roofing its courtyards in glass and linking its galleries with metal bridges, making it one of the country's most dynamic cultural institutions. Its permanent collection shows the great Brazilian painters, alongside temporary exhibitions. One ticket covers all three buildings, and entry is free on Saturdays. It stands beside Jardim da Luz and Luz station, home of the Museum of the Portuguese Language, so the two pair easily.
