Sala São Paulo is a concert hall built inside the Júlio Prestes railway station, which went up between 1926 and 1938 as the headquarters and departure point of the Sorocabana railway, a company set up by coffee barons to carry their crop to the port of Santos. Renovation began in November 1997, after Governor Mário Covas saw the station as an ideal home for the orchestra, and the hall opened on 9 July 1999 with 1,498 seats. It is home to the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, OSESP, and hosts symphonic and chamber concerts. Concert tickets vary by programme, and guided tours of the building are free or low-cost, booked in advance.
