Oscar Niemeyer designed the Memorial of Indigenous Peoples after the maloca of the Yanomami people, their round communal house, from an idea by the anthropologists Darcy and Berta Ribeiro, with funding from the Banco do Brasil Foundation. It was finished in 1987, but the Federal District's governor turned it into a museum of modern art; indigenous communities protested, and the building stood closed for years until it reopened as their memorial in 1999. It stands on the Eixo Monumental between the JK Memorial and Praça do Buriti, a museum, cultural centre and research institution for Brazil's indigenous cultures. Entry is free Tuesday to Friday 9:00-17:00, and at weekends and on holidays 10:00-17:00.
