Praça do Buriti is a square in Brasília's Civic-Administrative Zone on the Monumental Axis, surrounded by the seats of the Federal District's powers: the Court of Justice, the Palácio do Buriti, home of the executive, and the Legislative Chamber, along with the audit court and the public prosecutor's office. It and the main buildings around it were designed by the architect Nauro Esteves in line with Lúcio Costa's Pilot Plan. It opened on 25 August 1969 together with the Palácio do Buriti as the «Municipal Square», as named in the original plan. It covers more than 47,000 square metres, with two reflecting pools, twelve concrete benches and 14,000 square metres of gardens, and a grove of more than a hundred mango trees beside it stretches to the Memorial of Indigenous Peoples. Its present name honours the single buriti palm planted there by Israel Pinheiro, head of the company that built the new capital, inspired by the poem «Um buriti perdido» by Afonso Arinos. It makes a short stop on a tour of the Monumental Axis.
