The Royal Palace beside the Duomo housed Milan's rulers for six centuries โ city dynasties, then Spanish and Austrian empires, then the Italian crown. The bombing of 1943 burned its great rooms, most famously the Hall of Caryatids, left deliberately scarred as witness โ and the void filled with a new vocation that makes it today Italy's premier palace of major art exhibitions. Its programme is its visit: successive blockbuster shows of Picasso, Dalรญ, Caravaggio, Hockney calibre, organised to Paris-London standard โ so what hangs when you are in Milan decides your entry, and its position two steps from the cathedral makes the addition easy. Its entrance shares the courtyard with the Duomo Museum, and a small permanent section tells the palace's own story for those wanting context.
