The San Nicolás lookout is "the world's most beautiful sunset" by a testimony attributed to Clinton and adopted as Granada's motto: from the upper Albaicín square the Alhambra reveals itself complete on its hill — palaces, qasba and red-stone towers, snow-backed Sierra Nevada behind them nine months of the year — the canvas that abridged al-Andalus for humanity. The golden hour is a communal rite: gitano flamenco players, students, lovers and travellers on the stone wall as the Alhambra turns gold, then copper, then lit shadow — applause at sundown is ordinary here. The climb is half the tale: the UNESCO Albaicín's white lanes and carmen doorways — and Granada's Grand Mosque neighbours the lookout directly, its garden sharing the same view in quiet welcome. Walk up; ride the little C31/C32 quarter buses down.
