Yes โ because the permanent collection is free you can spend forty minutes seeing the highlights without feeling you wasted a ticket, then continue walking the island. That makes it one of the easiest museums to slot into a busy day, unlike paid museums that impose a get-your-money's-worth logic.

Stockholm's Moderna Museet holds one of northern Europe's strongest modern art collections: Picasso, Matisse, Dali, Rauschenberg, Warhol and Duchamp, alongside genuine depth in twentieth-century Nordic art. The permanent collection is entirely free โ you pay only for major temporary exhibitions. It stands on the small, quiet island of Skeppsholmen, itself a reason to come: a former naval island in the middle of the city, almost car-free, reached by a short bridge from the centre. The current building (1998) is by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, a series of pyramidal lanterns drawing in diffuse northern light โ the best light for paintings. Outside, large sculptures are scattered across the grass, most notably the colourful Paradiset group by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely โ a creature of red and blue masses that has become the island's signature. The cafe, with its view over the water and a Calder sculpture in front, is one of the calmest rest stops in central Stockholm.
