The Residence is the mature Mozart: the birth house grown too small, the family crossed the river in 1773 to this roomy Dance Master's House โ and here Wolfgang wrote his Salzburg symphonies and concertos, played between seventeen and twenty-five, before the great Vienna departure. The museum runs wider and calmer than the birthplace: the original dance hall with its concerts, Mozart's violin and his original fortepiano, the family's famously sharp letters (the audio guide performs them) โ and the section on his sister Nannerl, the folded-away genius, the museum's moving chapter. The pairing is deliberate: birthplace for the miracle child, Residence for the storming young man โ their combined ticket every lover's arithmetic. And its spot beside the Mirabell gardens orders the route naturally.
