The Palace of Instruction is a protected historic building in Cuiabá's historic centre, opened on 15 August 1914 under governor Joaquim Augusto da Costa Marques on a 4,757-square-metre plot that had held a ruined barracks. It was built with 27 classrooms, four offices, a vestibule, two inner courtyards and a great hall, on two floors of 1,286 square metres each. The building first held two schools, the Pedro Celestino teacher-training school upstairs and the Barão de Melgaço model school downstairs, and later the historic Liceu Cuiabano. From October 1971 it housed state departments, and in 1975 the state public library moved in, together with museums of history, natural history and anthropology, a picture gallery and a free art studio. With its broad façade and two courtyards, it is one of Cuiabá's finest historic buildings, seen on a walk around the historic centre a few steps from the Mundéu fountain. Check opening times.
