Rio de Janeiro's Museum of Modern Art, MAM Rio, is one of Brazil's most important cultural institutions, set in Flamengo Park near the historic centre, between the national monument to the dead of the Second World War and Santos Dumont Airport, on Guanabara Bay. It was founded in 1948 by a group of businessmen as a private non-profit. Its building is the best-known work of the architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy, completed in 1955 with the engineer Carmen Portinho, and a landmark of modern architecture worldwide: a cadence of external pillars carries a gallery free of internal columns, with footings driven 20 metres into the landfill. Gardens by Roberto Burle Marx surround it, and a spiral ramp climbs to a roof terrace overlooking the bay and Sugarloaf. The museum was the stage for key moments of the Brazilian artistic avant-garde and has built a large collection of modern and contemporary art. Check exhibitions and hours before visiting.
