Kin with different aims: the Bourbaki is human-history drama with its soundscape โ Mesdag sea-peace, light, and the technically purer illusion (its real dune the singularity). The genre lover collects both unthinking โ the passer takes whichever nears the route; each a peak of an extinct art.
Mesdag stood in a glass cylinder on the actual dune drawing the scene through it in sections โ then grid-enlarged onto the circularly hung canvas, the team finishing in four months: wife Sientje the village, School friends sky and riders. The glass cylinder itself is displayed โ method as half the tale.

The world's oldest panorama surviving in its original place: Mesdag's circular canvas of 1881 โ 14 metres high, 120 around โ climbed by a dark spiral stair onto a real sand dune amid 1880 Scheveningen: the fishing village, its boats on the beach, and sea to the horizon in a full circle whose frame has no edge. The illusion is complete in every rank: real skylight from a hidden glass dome, real sand and nets dissolving into canvas, the eye documentedly surrendering its first minutes โ Van Gogh visited and wrote 'the painting's only fault is that it has none'. Hendrik Mesdag, master of the Hague School's seascapes, painted it in four months with his wife and friends โ the museum wings around holding his work and the School: a full art hour in its original historic building.
