A historic Art Deco hotel on West Nanjing Road facing People's Park, built in 1931–1934 for the Joint Savings Society, formed by several banks, to designs by the Hungarian-Slovak architect Ladislav Hudec, who drew on New York's American Radiator Building. It rises 83.8 m with twenty-two floors above ground and two below; it was the tallest building in Asia from its completion until 1963 and the tallest in Shanghai until 1983, its dark façade lines running vertically up to a stepped crown. The building can be seen free from People's Park and the West Nanjing Road pavement, steps from People's Square metro station and the Nanjing Road pedestrian street.
