Shanghai's main shopping street and one of the busiest in the world alongside the Champs-Élysées, Oxford Street and Fifth Avenue, named after the city of Nanjing and divided into Nanjing Road East and Nanjing Road West. Its best-known stretch is the pedestrian East section, running from People's Square towards the historic Bund, lined with long-established department stores, international brands and traditional sweet shops, with a little tourist train running along it. In the evening the street becomes a river of light as giant signs and screens glow on the buildings and crowds of shoppers fill it, and from its eastern end you can walk to the riverfront. Wandering is free and evening is best. It gets very crowded on holidays, so watch your belongings, check food ingredients and head for the city's known halal restaurants.
