Shanghai's main stage for opera and ballet, on the north side of People's Square, designed by the French architect Jean-Marie Charpentier with the East China Architectural Design Institute and opened on 27 August 1998. A white roof curves upwards over walls of glass, and the building is often described as a crystal palace. Inside are three halls: the main auditorium in gold and red, with 1,631 seats on three levels, and two smaller theatres. It stages opera, ballet, symphony concerts, musicals and Chinese opera, and has hosted touring companies from around the world. The building can be admired from the square at any time, while performances are ticketed show by show through the theatre's website and box office; People's Square metro station is next door.
