China's first city planning exhibition hall, opened in 2000 on People's Square beside the city government building, after which similar halls spread to China's major cities. It closed for renovation in December 2019 and reopened in August 2022. Its best-known exhibit is a huge model of central Shanghai showing existing and planned buildings, alongside halls on the city's history and future under the themes «Humanistic Shanghai», «Innovative Shanghai» and «Ecological Shanghai», and smaller models of areas such as the Bund. Entry is free with a booking through its mini-programme up to seven days ahead; it is open from 9 am to 5 pm, last entry 4 pm, closed on Wednesdays, per visitor guides.
