Parque das Ruínas in Santa Teresa is a cultural centre built into the ruins of the mansion of Laurinda Santos Lobo, a Belle Époque patron who hosted intellectuals and artists for concerts and gatherings in the early 20th century. After 40 years of abandonment the state bought it in 1993, and it reopened in 1997 to a design by the architects Ernani Freire and Sonia Lopes, who kept the ruined walls and added a contemporary touch. Its terraces give a panoramic view of Guanabara Bay on one side and the city centre on the other, and it hosts outdoor concerts and exhibitions. In 2023 it was officially renamed after the journalist Glória Maria, whose mural by Eduardo Kobra it displays, and the Chácara do Céu museum is next door. Free; Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-18:00.
