Parque Sarmiento is the largest landscaped green space in Córdoba city, at its geographic heart a few blocks from the centre, named after the former president Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. Its roots go back to the First National Industrial Exhibition of 1871, and cultural landmarks such as the Caraffa Museum, Palacio Ferreyra and the Ciudad de las Artes stand beside it. It has footpaths under tall trees, an artificial lake with boats and a duck island, an amusement park with a big Ferris wheel, a biodiversity park that replaced the old zoo, viewpoints, a skating rink, an open-air theatre and play areas, and locals come for runs and family outings. Entering the park is free, and some activities inside charge. It is loveliest on weekend mornings or around the lake before sunset.
