The Austrians founded it deliberately to compete with Kraków across the river.
An artificial earthen mound about sixteen metres high above Podgórze, and nobody knows who built it or exactly when. Legend calls it the grave of Krakus, Kraków's mythical founder, and excavation suggests an origin before the tenth century. The climb is a short walk and the view from the top covers the whole of Kraków — free and always open.

A museum about the Podgórze district in a historic inn at the foot of the Krakus Mound, a branch of the Museum of Kraków opened in 2018. Podgórze is not a Kraków district but a town that was independent: the Austrians founded it in 1784 on the opposite bank of the river as a rival to Kraków, with its own laws and privileges, and it remained separate until it was incorporated in 1915. That explains why it looks different in its architecture and layout. The museum tells that whole history: the Austrian founding, industry, daily life, and then the period that made the name known worldwide — the creation of the Kraków ghetto here in 1941 and its liquidation in 1943. Its treatment of the ghetto differs from the Eagle Pharmacy and Schindler's Factory: here the ghetto is part of the story of a district that existed before and after, not the sole subject. The site sits at the foot of the Krakus Mound, an earthen mound of obscure origin that can be climbed for a view over the city.
