Praia dos Ossos is one of the best-known beaches of Armação dos Búzios and the richest in history. Its name means «Bones Beach», after the whaling the villagers carried on from 1730, which left whale bones scattered over the sand. That trade also gave the town its name, as an «armação» was a station for catching and processing whales. The beach is a small, calm cove that fishermen have used for centuries, and their colourful boats still moor in its water. Along its tree-lined front stand restored old fishermen's houses and the Armação dos Búzios yacht club, and on a small knoll at one end an 18th-century church can be seen from the beach. Its calm water suits gentle swimming and paddling, water taxis leave from here for Búzios's other beaches, and it is a few steps from Rua das Pedras and the waterfront promenade in the town centre. It is loveliest in the morning before the crowds, or at sunset when things quieten and the colours reflect on the boats.
