**The largest square in Greece** — and its huge scale is not architectural generosity but a **Venetian military decision**: they demolished everything in front of the Old Fortress to give their guns a clear field of fire. The resulting emptiness then became the town's social heart. Along its western edge runs the **Liston**: a row of shaded arcades with cafés beneath them, built by the **French** in the Napoleonic period on the model of the Rue de Rivoli in Paris — the island's best-known promenade. On the square itself is a **cricket ground** — a genuine British legacy rather than a joke, with real matches played on it and a Corfiot cricket tradition unmatched anywhere in Greece. There is also a round **bandstand** where the town's bands play, the classical **Maitland Rotunda**, and gardens, fountains and statues. ✅ And it is where Corfiots themselves come out in the evening — not only visitors.

Local clubs were founded, and matches have continued on that same square for more than a century and a half. ✅ **It is alive today**: Corfu has clubs and competitions, and most of the Greek national side comes from the island. ✅ **A linguistic curiosity**: English cricket terms entered the Corfiot dialect in Greek pronunciation, so you hear words derived from "certainly" and "stick" shouted on the pitch. ⚠ As a visitor: matches are **seasonal and not daily** — ask at your hotel or check a club's fixtures; anyone who catches one sees something found nowhere else in Greece.
**Once, yes, with conditions.** ✅ **What you are paying for is real**: a seat under two-hundred-year-old French arcades, the largest square in Greece in front of you and the Old Fortress behind it — a setting that does not repeat, and an hour there at sunset is among the best things in Corfu. ⚠ **What you should know**: the prices are **double** what you pay a hundred metres away in the lanes, for the same coffee, and the service is slower at peak. ✅ **The ideal arrangement**: sit on the Liston **once**, order **one drink only** rather than a meal — the food here is by far the worst value — and have dinner in the inner lanes at half the price and twice the quality. ✅ **And entirely free**: the garden benches on the square give you the same view for nothing.
