The Dutch Railway Museum is among Europe's best and most impressive train museums for families: set in a grand historic railway station of 1874 (Maliebaan station) fully restored, with vast yards where historic locomotives and carriages line up โ from the first steam trains to the Netherlands' modern yellow trains, boarded and entered. But it is more than a train display: four immersive "journey" rides carry the visitor through railway history โ a ghost train in "the Golden Mountain", a trip through the steam revolution, and a simulator train. A rare mix of a genuine technical museum and an educational theme park, easily consuming a full half-day. In a historic station east of the centre (sometimes reached by a special shuttle train from Central Station) โ a first-rate family destination for all ages, and the peak of Utrecht's museums for children.
