St. Peter's is the German world's oldest continuously working abbey (696 AD) โ and all Salzburg its child: from its monks the city began. Its church is Austria's tenderest green-and-gold rococo, but the immortal part is its cemetery: Europe's most beautiful graveyard beyond dispute โ wrought-iron crosses and flowers between arcades of family vaults, the rock cliff its fourth wall. In that cliff, the hermits' catacombs carved by tradition before Christ (a stair on a small ticket) โ and the cemetery view from their galleries is the famous Sound of Music frame (the family's hiding scene was studio-copied from it). The abbey's restaurant documents itself Europe's oldest (803 AD) โ twelve unbroken centuries of hospitality. The whole is half an hour of peace at the crowd's heart.
