The tram museum of the municipal transport company occupies the old Bad Cannstatt tram depot of 1929, a genuine depot with the rails still set into its floor, which is why the vehicles stand as they would have stood overnight after service rather than inside glass cases. The collection runs to around forty historic vehicles, from horse-drawn trams through the earliest electric cars to post-war railcars, together with signalling equipment, uniforms and ticket machines, and a section explaining how Stuttgart's steep, narrow-valleyed terrain shaped the whole network, including the rack railway and the funicular. The city converted its entire metre-gauge system to standard gauge between the 1980s and 2007, which means a great deal of what stands here vanished from the streets within a single generation's lifetime. Tickets are six euros for adults, four fifty reduced and fifteen for a family, and the hours are odd, so take note: Sunday from ten to six, Monday to Wednesday from ten to four, and closed from Thursday to Saturday. On Sundays historic cars run in genuine service on lines twenty-one and twenty-three, and a combined day ticket at about thirteen euros fifty covers the museum with unlimited rides. That combination is what actually makes the visit.
