Partly โ the rainforest and aquarium work for any visitor, but most interactive exhibits are pitched at school ages with simplified educational logic. Without children you will spend an hour and a half rather than half a day, and the price may not justify itself โ whereas with children it is the best investment for a rainy day in Gothenburg.

Universeum is a national science centre combining an interactive museum, an indoor zoo and an aquarium in a single seven-storey building, opened in 2001 directly beside Liseberg. The idea is that you do not read about ecosystems but walk into them. The heart of the building is a genuine rainforest seventeen metres tall: an enclosed glazed space held at tropical temperature and humidity, with thousands of living plants and birds, butterflies, monkeys and sloths moving freely around you as you climb walkways suspended among the trees. The humidity hits a visitor arriving from a Swedish winter immediately. Other sections include an aquarium with sharks and glass tunnels, a reptile section, fully interactive physics, space and technology exhibits, and laboratories for children. The ticket is among Gothenburg's most expensive, but the visit genuinely absorbs half a day โ and it is the city's first choice for families in bad weather.
